Book: Man’s search for meaning

What is your idea when someone asks you what is meaning of life for you? I always thought that meaning is something stored in a box on path of life and one day I will open it and all will become set. But that approach didn’t got me anywhere. Man’s search for meaning tries to get another perspective on meaning of life. It distinguishes every single instance of life of a person different and thus has a different meaning for it. In this way life can not have a particular single meaning. We should look at moment and we will find some reason to live, be it suffering.

Get a perspective on how to fight for your life, when it is hard by reading it.

Jack Ma, western books and India

You must be wondering what these three things have in common. Two days back, annual meeting of World Economic forum ended. I was watching interview given by Jack Ma, this year. Discussion started from him, telling about Alibaba, how it started. What I saw different in Jack Ma was that there was no greedy  approach in his ideas. From last 1 year I have been reading books like, Magic of thinking big, Think and grow rich. After reading them I realized that these books were written way past back in time. They get you motivated still, but one important point when learning is to know context and environment around the book and how it differs from yours. Its not reading alone, you have to take out book in your life properly otherwise it will be just another asset in your mind. Secondly, I realized that each country with their people have there own way of living, culture and they also have their own literature. If all we Indians, started having one car per person then what will happen. And these books were written according to some culture. You have to filter out knowledge out of them properly.

I was trying to learn what Jack Ma does that makes him CEO of Alibaba. At end one person asked about Global warming. He asked what things you want to teach to younger generation, probably last one that can do something about climate change, to make a spiritual mindset, an environmental mindset about world to care. Jack answered, that from past 200 years, in our hunger for knowledge based society we gained so much. We didn’t look inside ourselves. And today human beings get much more then they expect they should have. So environmental pollution is because human beings are getting greedy. Big data in future is going help us look inside us, what ugly side we have within our hearts. This is Chinese philosophy, to look inside everyday. So if we do not take action against pollution, all the money you make will spend in hospital, medicine and our children will be in big trouble.
Now what I saw was how deep is this Chinese philosophy is embedded inside him. I want to fixate not on having learning Chinese philosophy Jack Ma follows and not American way of living, but to have your own values and religion. There is where India comes. We people are filled with youngsters like me. Thinking and trying to do something new, innovative. It is easy to get lost in western books, following centered philosophy towards a goal.  But you should always consider if that knowledge can be applied to your scenario or not. We have so many religions here to see, choose one and follow values. So you don’t have to follow American books necessarily and their way of living all by your heart. They have lot of less people than India or China have. We should remember our culture of meeting people, our relatives, our neighbors and helping each other out. We should gain knowledge that books are offering you, and give them consideration if they can be applied to your scenario or not. Its not how often you go to temples or mosques, but it is about being good at heart and following your dreams with values you have.

Cartoons, comics and zen pencils

We all probably, grew up watching cartoon on our TV sets. Apart from animation there is a spirit in cartoons that is not in other TV shows. Cartoon characters are able to do things that seem impossible to us in real life. I remember Phineas and Ferb, that came on Disney XD. These two brothers made my summer delight. Plus you also get to watch some of them speaking bhojpuri. There is a lot of wisdom and inspiration in them if you are willing to take some. For simple motivational quotes searching few months ago, I found zen pencils. Its free to browse website and is filled with some amazing quotes mixed with inspirational sketches and cartoons. And that is the point. This book takes cartoon shows in a reversed way. Cartoon shows on TV did great works, but were fictional. And in book, great people are shown in a comic way. So, if you feel bored after a long book, try one of cartoon from website, or book(flipkart) and bring color back to your life.

What Seneca says, On the shortness of life

It was time of new year.  I was engaged in alumni interaction session in my college. It was on 2nd of January. There was a rush all time to arrange all things as soon as we can. I went to college for those 2 days. I don’t know why but there is feeling always when I get to college, feeling of existence. I was trying to find some book to read, which will tell me what to do in my life, or what to do to find it or anything near it. I encountered a mail from medium.com, which said 110 books for New Year 2018. On that page I found On the shortness of life. It is a series of essays by Seneca, a Roman philosopher which tries to explain about how life seems long to us, how it passes by too easily and how we regret at last that we didn’t lived it well. How we waste our time in idleness or worldly pleasures instead of working towards our desires. Why some people hate their jobs and still work on them day and night. They think about the future ahead of them. You can learn a lot from such short book. Plus the book is free. It is open source and a copy of it are available at archive.org as well as on wikisource.org. Although, both of them are different translations, you can read and select which one do you want to read. There is a print version also available, which I made myself to print out on A4 size. Link to print version.
Thanks for reading, suggestions are always welcomed.

audio podcasting

I have been hunching down this idea from last 15-20 days. I just thought to share it here.

Audio pod-casting is something what is still growing in India. Audio pod-cast means a talk show, interview, story with episodes and even whole and complete books. Amazon has already jumped into that business with audible.com. Apart from that if you search for now on google, what you will see is that still today most of pod-casts are US-UK based. Simplicity of pluging-in your earphones while way on work, college, long routes on trains are some of places where it can be useful. Now what I see is opportunity to start with something in this field. If you are a content creator, you are musician, you are a person with good voice or most simple is you are interested in doing something in field. Following are some links to some of India pod-casts. If you are interested in it, have something to share your views, be sure to get back to me on my email: amey.jain7@gmail.com

Happiness, lumpy rewards and Operation bluemoon

Currently I am reading The Black swan by Nassim Nicholas Taleb. It is an amazing book if you are thinking of entering domain that is filled with uncertainty. For work I am currently tracking my work with help of emacs org-mode. I want to share what link I found between tracking your work on task basis and how our human mind works and why you should try once monitoring your work hour and habits. What writer refers to hedonic calculus: it does not pay to shoot for one large win. He says that our minds are designed to to get enjoyment from consistent flow of small, but frequent rewards. Rewards may not be big but they need to be frequent.

Take an example. What would you like more: To have 1,00,000 every year for ten years or to have 10,00,000 in one year and nothing in preceding nine. To have one massage now or twice the next week. It matters more how frequent we have good news rather than how good is good news.

Sometimes there are problems when you have a lot of work, may be very ambitious, but after sometime you lose your path. Probably when you are all on yourself working alone on a project. Or you don’t have someone to mentor you or tell you what to work on this is probably a great technique to try. Start simply by breaking down tasks you need to complete for a goal. And start tracking time you are investing in them. You can not only see how is it going on but also how much time have you invested in which task. I personally use org-mode to track time and tasks but there are plenty of other applications there to do the same. Org-mode is easy to use and also able to give more insights with internal clock feature to track your timing. Below are some links you may found useful to start with.

Where good ideas come from – Steven Johnson

Starting from history of Charles Darwin, describing the origins of coral reef and Darwin’s paradox, book starts with a different point of ideas. Book tries to convince reader the slow hunching process of ideas and not what we think in general a single eureka moment along with supporting arguments.  Then it moves to some basic techniques that may be useful in idea generation, but also in preserving them. It binds all important elements that are connected with generation of idea, environment that incubates them and trends that are followed commonly. One of the best books I have ever read and is a must read to get reality of `Eureka` moments.

Books I read in 2016

Business Maharajas by Gita Piramal:

I found it in old book store searching for inspiration. It binds in single book story of 7 great business tycoons of India. Starting with Dhirubhai Ambani, it reveals out struggle of making Reliance one of the leading industries in not only India but also throughout the world. After that comes the story of long queues for Bajaj Scooter and making of Bajaj by Rahul Bajaj.  Then comes one of the most reputed business empire leader Aditya Vikram Birla. It is noteworthy how author describes vision and actions of these leaders. How they thought and changed the world around them. Author describes then about Ram Prasad Goenka. Last story covers with emerging and leading empire of Ratan Tata.

The Funda of Mix-ology by Mainak Dhar:

The cover page reads ” What bar-tending teaches that IIM doesn’t “. Story of an IIM graduate working in a regular corporate and trying to find his existence and passion for writing in his world. How he struggles between a safe corporate world, his passion of writing and a girl he met in a party. A twist comes when he meets with an accident on road.

The Magic of thinking Big by David J. Schwartz:

A self help with a ‘Big’ name. Book introduces some of common misconceptions and concepts of thinking in right direction to achieve goals. It may seem boring in beginning but as you go through it completely you get to understand what writer is trying to convey. How some small and simple habits can change your life in a big way.

It happened in India:

Story of Pantaloons, Big Bazaar and great Indian customer. If you want to know how retail industry changed from small shops in congested and crowded streets of bazaars to Pantaloons and Big Bazaar, this book is a sure read. Encapsulating the vision and thinking behind, it describes the story of Kishore Biyani founder of Future Group.

Ignited Minds by APJ Abdul Kalam:

You must read this book and get the vision 2020. A logical step forward from Dr. Kalam’s earlier book India 2020, book consists of many inspirational messages. What is his dream of making India a developed country by year 2020, what role models of society give, learning from great scientists and mathematicians like S Ramanujan from India, all is described in his book. He takes you to a journey where you can realise his dreams and take forward with a better vision.

To B.E. yourself or to be yourself

Some months ago…I went to Hyderabad with my cousin for an operation of my grandfather. It was a nice trip. Well throughout the journey I was thinking what was that thing that always stopped the lectures into my mind . I remember those days when I was in front of whole class and said that I didn’t wanted to be in IT ,that I didn’t wanted to be in this college…..I always wanted Mechanical but I didn’t have good score. That’s India! We get branches on our marks and not on interests. But after this also I didn’t got my satisfaction . It happened many times when I felt suffocating inside lecture hall. It felt that someone is torturing me in the class. That pulled me many times to empty corridors. Those corridors questioned me again and again why are you here? Believe me this feeling was pulling me away from the fears of getting failed…..
Well after sometime I didn’t have any problem from my branch and it happened that I was discussing about projects with my friends and seniors. After all this happened I realized that problem is not of any engineering college or its branch…… The problem is of my thinking. Some days back I realized that I want to write. I have written some short stories and poems but only few people know this. I was afraid what people would think if they would read me. And other reason was me itself. I never thought of showing my writings to the world. Between this tussle in Hyderabad I read an advertisement of some website, with a heading “Why not be a writer?”. This raised a question strong enough to pull me here. The paper was in my one hand and in other with my phone. I was just thinking whether to register or not. I again thought whether my work would be liked or not. But I didn’t wanted to repeat my mistake again and I didn’t wanted others to. Being an engineer it was my moral duty to provide a solution :-p. I wrote this. I don’t care whether anyone likes it or not. Its important whether I like it or not. What you do is for your satisfaction not others. When you do something for others it may make them happy but not you. It applies to all things you do. Its others problem whether they like it or not . I have learnt.
Life gives us many opportunities but time is not always with you. Today time is there for you, it may go tomorrow.

My first post

Hi guys,
It was today when I realised that I should also write something.
I wrote some poems and tried to write stories but they never got complete. I presenting one of the it to you. Here is a poem I wrote in my 7 class. Actually I was feeling a bit lonely so that’s why I downloaded WordPress and then here I am.

I love you
I don’t know why my heart says that,
I love you.
I don’t why my heart thinks that you love me,
I love you.
I dont know why my heart beats only for you,
In day and night,
Dawn to dusk.
It might be rain, when sing this song,
Me and you.
I don’t know why my heart says that I love you.
